This tale was first published as a fairy tale in 1853 by Serbian folklorist Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, in his landmark collection Srpske narodne pripovijetke (Serbian Folk Fairy Tales). Karadžić was a pivotal figure in Serbian language reform and folklore collection — a role comparable to what the Brothers Grimm were for German-language folklore.
The earliest English translation was Elodie Lawton Mijatović's 1874 rendition, "The Golden Apple-tree, and the Nine Peahens"; it was later included in Andrew Lang's Crimson Fairy Book in 1901, and Arthur Rackham's 1916 illustrated English edition also became widely known.
