檀君神话最早见于高丽时代僧人一然约1281年编成的《三国遗事》，书中引用了更早的、今已失传的史料。按照传说，檀君王俭建立了朝鲜半岛上的第一个国家「古朝鲜」，因此被视为朝鲜民族的始祖。

The Dangun myth first appears in the Samguk Yusa, compiled around 1281 by the Goryeo monk Iryeon, who quoted even older sources that are now lost. According to legend, Dangun Wanggeom founded Gojoseon, the first kingdom on the Korean Peninsula, so he is regarded as the founding ancestor of the Korean people.

今天的韩国把每年10月3日定为「开天节」，纪念传说中檀君建立古朝鲜，这一天是韩国的法定假日。故事里提到的艾草和大蒜，至今仍是朝鲜半岛饮食和传统医药里非常常见的东西。

Today South Korea celebrates 3 October as Gaecheonjeol, the National Foundation Day, honouring the legendary founding of Gojoseon by Dangun, and it is a public holiday. The mugwort and garlic in the story are still very common in Korean food and traditional medicine.
