This story is known in nearly every home in the Philippines, where its Tagalog title means The Turtle and the Monkey. In July 1889, the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal wrote it down in English and published it in Trubner Oriental Record in London. This work is often regarded as the beginning of Philippine children literature.
Rizal (1861 to 1896) was a doctor and a writer, and he was also good at drawing. When he published this story, he compared it with the Japanese folk tale The Battle of the Monkey and the Crab. Both stories have a greedy monkey, a tree full of fruit, and a small friend who cannot climb.
