山精与水精的传说，记载在越南古代志怪故事集《岭南摭怪》里，篇名叫《伞圆山传》。传说雄王第十八代的公主要选夫婿，山神和水神都来求亲。故事里的伞圆山是一座真实的山，就在今天越南河内西边的巴维山区。

The legend of the Mountain God and the Water God is recorded in the old Vietnamese collection of strange tales Linh Nam Chich Quai, in a chapter named after Mount Tan Vien. The daughter of the eighteenth Hung King was to choose a husband, and both the mountain god and the water god came to ask for her hand. Mount Tan Vien is a real mountain, in the Ba Vi area west of present-day Hanoi.

越南北部属于季风气候，每年大约5月到9月是雨季，红河流域常常洪水泛滥。古人用山神与水神年年相斗来解释这种季节性的洪水，这个传说也被看作越南最早的「治水」故事之一，至今仍收在越南小学的课本里。

Northern Vietnam has a monsoon climate, and the rainy season lasts roughly from May to September, when the Red River often floods. People long ago explained these yearly floods as the endless fight between the mountain god and the water god. The legend is seen as one of the earliest flood control stories in Vietnam, and it is still in Vietnamese primary school textbooks today.
