This story is painted on the wall of Cave 257 at the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, called the Deer King Jataka, created over 1,500 years ago — one of China's earliest comic-strip-style narrative paintings. In 1981, the Shanghai Animation Film Studio turned it into a beloved animated film, moving generations of Chinese audiences.
传说山林里住着一只浑身九种颜色的鹿，它救起一个溺水的人，只求对方永远保守自己的秘密。谁知这个人后来见利忘义，把九色鹿的行踪出卖给了国王。
Legend tells of a deer living in the forest with fur of nine colors, who once rescued a drowning man and asked only that he keep the deer's whereabouts secret forever. But the man later betrayed that promise for the lure of reward, selling out the deer to the king.
