《罗摩衍那》相传是印度蚁垤仙人所作，全书约两万四千颂，分为七篇，大约成书于公元前几世纪到公元后几世纪之间。印度最重要的节日之一排灯节，在许多地方就是为了庆祝罗摩回到家乡阿逾陀。

The Ramayana is traditionally said to be the work of the sage Valmiki. It has about twenty four thousand verses in seven books and took shape between several centuries BC and several centuries AD. In many parts of India, Diwali, one of the most important festivals, celebrates the return of Rama to his home city of Ayodhya.

《罗摩衍那》流传到了整个东南亚：泰国有改编本《拉玛坚》，柬埔寨吴哥窟的石雕回廊里也刻着楞伽大战的场面。国学大师季羡林先生花了十年时间，把这部长诗完整译成中文，1984年全部出版。

The Ramayana spread across Southeast Asia: Thailand has its own version, the Ramakien, and the carved galleries of Angkor Wat in Cambodia show the great battle of Lanka. The Chinese scholar Ji Xianlin spent ten years translating the whole epic into Chinese, and the complete translation was published in 1984.
