真假美猴王的故事出自《西游记》第五十六回到第五十八回。第五十八回的回目叫《二心搅乱大乾坤 一体难修真寂灭》，「二心」就是两个心思，很多读者认为，六耳猕猴象征的正是孙悟空心里的另一个自己。

The story of the Real and Fake Monkey King comes from chapters fifty six to fifty eight of Journey to the West. Chapter fifty eight is titled Two Minds Throw the Universe into Chaos. Two minds means two conflicting thoughts, and many readers believe the six eared macaque stands for another self inside the Monkey King.

《西游记》里不少回目都用「心猿」来称呼孙悟空，把猴子比作人那颗跳来跳去、难以安定的心。所以真假美猴王的故事，也常被看作一场关于「如何战胜自己内心」的寓言。
