这个故事出自越南古书《岭南摭怪》，题目叫《蒸饼传》（越南语 Chưng bính truyện）。相传书中最早的二十二篇故事，由陈朝官员陈世法在14世纪后期收集，用汉文写成；今天流传的本子，又经过15世纪末武琼等人的校订。「岭南」在当时指五岭以南的广大地区，包括今天的两广和越南北部。

This story comes from the old Vietnamese book Linh Nam Chich Quai, where it is titled Chung Binh Truyen, the Story of the Steamed Cakes. The first twenty two tales of the book are said to have been collected in the late 14th century by the Tran dynasty official Tran The Phap and written in classical Chinese. The version we read today was later revised by Vu Quynh and others at the end of the 15th century. At that time the name Linh Nam meant the wide land south of the Five Ridges, including the present day provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi and northern Vietnam.

故事里的方饼叫 bánh chưng，包着糯米、绿豆和猪肉，用叶子裹好蒸煮，如今仍是越南北方春节（Tết）的传统食物；圆饼叫 bánh dày，是软糯的圆形糯米饼。古人相信「天圆地方」，中国古书《周髀算经》里就有「方属地，圆属天」的说法，所以圆饼象征天，方饼象征地。

The square cake in the story is called banh chung. It holds sticky rice, mung beans and pork, wrapped in leaves and steamed, and it is still a traditional food of the Tet New Year in northern Vietnam. The round cake is called banh day, a soft and sticky round rice cake. People long ago believed that the sky is round and the earth is square, and the old Chinese book Zhou Bi Suan Jing has the saying that the square belongs to the earth and the round belongs to the sky, so the round cake stands for the sky and the square cake stands for the earth.
