The Turnip (Russian: Репка) is one of the defining examples of the "cumulative tale" and is classified internationally as ATU type 2044, "Pulling up the Turnip." It was first collected by folklorist Alexander Afanasyev in 1863, appearing as tale No. 89 in his landmark anthology of Russian Fairy Tales, drawn from oral tradition in the rural Arkhangelsk Governorate.

此后，教育家康斯坦丁·乌申斯基（1864年）、弗拉基米尔·达利（1870年）等人相继将其改写为面向儿童的读本，才逐渐固定下我们今天熟悉的角色顺序。一个有趣的语言细节：俄语原文里，这几个角色的名字本身就押韵——dedka、babka、vnuchka、zhuchka、koshka、myshka——这也是它能在俄罗斯家喻户晓的重要原因之一。

Educators such as Konstantin Ushinsky (1864) and Vladimir Dal (1870) later reworked it into the beloved children's version, fixing the now-familiar cast order. A fun linguistic detail: in the original Russian, the characters' names actually rhyme — dedka, babka, vnuchka, zhuchka, koshka, myshka — part of why the tale is so deeply loved across Russia.
