The Ugly Duckling is an original fairy tale by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, first published on 11 November 1843 in Copenhagen as part of his New Fairy Tales collection. It tells of a young bird mistaken for ugly, who endures mockery and loneliness through a cold winter before growing into a graceful swan. Unlike many of Andersen's tales, this one borrows nothing from folklore — it came entirely from his own imagination and life experience.
