Wawel is a hill beside the Polish city of Kraków, and the castle on top of it was once home to the kings of Poland. Legend says the name Kraków comes from an ancient chieftain called Krak, so it means "Krak's town." This dragon legend first appears in a chronicle written about eight hundred years ago by the Polish historian Wincenty Kadłubek.

At the foot of Wawel Hill today, there really is a cave called the Dragon's Den (Smocza Jama), and visitors can walk inside (opening times vary by season). Outside its entrance stands a six-metre bronze dragon, unveiled in 1972 and made by the sculptor Bronisław Chromy. Every few minutes it breathes real fire, powered by natural gas.
