This legend first appears in the Deeds of the Huns and Hungarians, written in Latin around 1282 to 1285 by Simon of Keza, a court cleric of King Ladislaus IV of Hungary. In that book, the brothers chase a hind, a female deer, and it vanishes in the Maeotian marshes, the area around the Sea of Azov today.
About six hundred years later, the Hungarian poet Janos Arany (1817–1882) retold it as the ballad The Legend of the Wondrous Stag, part of his long poem The Death of Buda, and it became known in every Hungarian home. Simon of Keza also wrote that the mother of the brothers was named Eneth, a name taken from the Hungarian word for a hind.
