1835年,丹麦作家汉斯·克里斯蒂安·安徒生在首都哥本哈根出版了他的第二本童话小册子《讲给孩子们听的童话》,《拇指姑娘》就收在里面。它的丹麦语原名叫Tommelise,前半部分tommel是大拇指的意思,Lise是丹麦常见的女孩名字。欧洲民间很早就流传着大拇指汤姆这类拇指大小的小人儿的故事,安徒生把这种想象写成了一篇全新的童话。
In 1835 the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen published his second little booklet of Fairy Tales Told for Children in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, and Thumbelina was one of the stories in it. Its Danish name is Tommelise: tommel means thumb, and Lise is a common name for girls in Denmark. Folk tales about thumb-sized little people, such as Tom Thumb, had been told in Europe for a long time, and Andersen turned this idea into a brand-new fairy tale.
安徒生1805年出生在丹麦的欧登塞,父亲是个鞋匠,家里很穷。他一生写了一百多篇童话,被翻译成一百多种语言。在中国,翻译家叶君健直接从丹麦文翻译了安徒生童话全集。1956年设立的国际安徒生奖是儿童文学领域的世界级大奖,2016年,中国作家曹文轩获得了这个奖。

In his lifetime he wrote more than a hundred fairy tales, which have been translated into more than a hundred languages. In China, the translator Ye Junjian translated the complete Andersen fairy tales directly from Danish. The Hans Christian Andersen Award, founded in 1956, is a world-class prize for literature written for children, and in 2016 the Chinese writer Cao Wenxuan won it.
