Urashima Taro is one of Japan's oldest legends. The Nihon Shoki, a history book completed in the year 720, records under the twenty-second year of Emperor Yuryaku (the year 478) that a man called Urashimako of Tanba Province caught a large turtle, which turned into a woman and took him to Horai, a mountain in the sea. Around the same time, his story also appeared in the Tango Fudoki and the poetry collection Manyoshu. The version we know today, with the rescued turtle, the Dragon Palace, Princess Otohime and the treasure box, took shape later in the Otogizoshi tales of the Muromachi period, roughly the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries.
In the town of Ine in northern Kyoto Prefecture stands Urashima Shrine, also called Ura Shrine, dedicated to Urashimako. It is said to have been founded in the year 825, and it keeps an ancient lacquered box said to be the treasure box, along with old picture scrolls telling the Urashima story. The coast there is still lined with small fishing villages, and people say it is the very place where Urashima Taro set off for the Dragon Palace.
