This story comes from the Tlingit and Haida peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America, and is one of their most important creation legends. In their culture, Raven is both a cunning trickster and the hero who brought light to the world — still carved onto totem poles there today, passed down through generations.
Legend says that long ago, the sun, moon, and stars were all locked away in wooden boxes by a greedy chief, leaving the world in total darkness. A raven with feathers as white as snow decided to steal that light back and return it to everyone.
