This story appears in the Bo Wu Zhi, a book compiled by Zhang Hua (232 to 300) of the Western Jin dynasty, in its eighth volume. The original is only one short sentence saying that when Shun passed away, his two wives wept, and their tears on the bamboo made all of it spotted. The Bo Wu Zhi is a book that records strange and wonderful things. The two wives in the story are Ehuang and Nuying, the daughters of Yao who married Shun, and the book says they were later called the Xiang ladies.
The Records of the Grand Historian says that Shun ruled for thirty nine years, passed away during a tour of the south in the wilds of Cangwu, and was buried near Mount Jiuyi south of the Yangtze, which is in Ningyuan in Hunan today. The Chu Ci collection called Nine Songs has two poems named Xiang Jun and Xiang Furen, which are about the gods of the Xiang River. On Junshan Island in Dongting Lake today there is still a tomb and a temple for the two wives, and the spotted bamboo that grows there is often used to make the ribs of fans.
