The story of Ymir comes mainly from the Prose Edda by the thirteenth century Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson. The poem The Prophecy of the Seeress in the Poetic Edda also says that at the beginning of time there was no sand, no sea and no cool waves, only a vast gap called Ginnungagap.

北欧神话里，帮助生命诞生的还有一头大母牛奥德姆布拉，它舔着带盐霜的冰块，舔出了众神的祖先。冰岛被称为「冰与火之国」，冰川和火山并存，也许正是这样的土地，给了北欧人冰火相遇、创造世界的灵感。

In Norse myth, life was also helped into being by a great cow, Audhumla, who licked salty blocks of ice until the ancestor of the gods appeared. Iceland is called the land of ice and fire, where glaciers and volcanoes sit side by side, and perhaps such a land inspired the Norse idea of a world born where ice meets fire.
