愚公移山出自《列子·汤问》。原文说太行、王屋二山「方七百里，高万仞」，北山愚公「年且九十」，面山而居，苦于出入要绕远路，于是带领子孙「叩石垦壤」。《列子》相传为战国时期列御寇所著，今天看到的版本经过晋代张湛整理并作注。

The story comes from the chapter Tang Wen of the Liezi. The original says the Taihang and Wangwu mountains were seven hundred li around and ten thousand ren high, and that the Foolish Old Man of the North Mountain, nearly ninety years old, lived facing them and was tired of going the long way round, so he led his children and grandchildren to break rocks and dig the soil. The Liezi is traditionally attributed to Lie Yukou of the Warring States period, and the version we read today was edited and annotated by Zhang Zhan of the Jin dynasty.

故事里的王屋山是真实存在的，就在今天的河南省济源市，太行山则绵延在河北、山西、河南三省之间。故事里还有一位「智叟」笑愚公太傻，愚公回答：「子又生孙，孙又生子……而山不加增，何苦而不平？」意思是子子孙孙无穷无尽，山却不会再长高，还怕挖不平吗？

Wangwu Mountain in the story is real: it stands in Jiyuan, Henan Province, while the Taihang Mountains stretch across Hebei, Shanxi and Henan. In the story, a Wise Old Man laughs at the Foolish Old Man, who replies that his sons will have grandsons and the grandsons will have sons, generation after generation without end, but the mountains will never grow any taller, so why worry that they cannot be levelled?
