琐罗亚斯德是古代波斯的宗教导师，琐罗亚斯德教就是以他命名的，中国古代称它为「祆教」。相传由他亲自创作的颂歌《伽萨》，保存在这个宗教的经典《阿维斯塔》里。他生活的年代至今没有定论，学者的推测从约公元前1500年到公元前6世纪不等。

Zoroaster was a religious teacher of ancient Persia, and Zoroastrianism is named after him; in ancient China it was called Xianjiao. The Gathas, hymns said to have been composed by Zoroaster himself, are preserved in the sacred book of the faith, the Avesta. His dates are still uncertain, and scholars place him anywhere from around 1500 BC to the sixth century BC.

在琐罗亚斯德教里，火象征纯洁与光明。伊朗亚兹德的一座火神庙里，保存着一簇据说从公元470年左右就从未熄灭的圣火。这个宗教在南北朝时期传入中国，唐代的长安城里就建有好几座祆祠。

In Zoroastrianism, fire stands for purity and light. A fire temple in Yazd, Iran, keeps a sacred flame said to have burned without going out since around the year 470. The faith reached China during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and in the Tang dynasty there were several Zoroastrian temples in the capital Changan.
